It has a minimum yield strength of 250 MPa (36 ksi), which is where the name comes from, and it is sold hot rolled as plate, flat bar, round and square bar and shapes. It machines well, welds easily and is an affordable, easy-to-source steel. A36 steel is chosen for parts that need the strength of steel, will be welded or have to be cost-effective: base plates, brackets, bushings, flanges and machinery parts. It comes as plate, flat bar, round and square bar.

A36 is chosen when a part needs the strength of steel and no heat treatment.
If your drawing doesn’t specify tolerances, we machine to ISO 2768-m (medium). On dimensions you call out —holes, fits and datum surfaces— we can hold ±0.025 mm (±0.001 in), and critical dimensions are checked in inspection. On thin plate with a lot of material removed from one side, the part can move slightly as rolling stresses are released; we handle that by machining both faces.
A36 leaves the hot rolling mill with a dark oxide layer, the mill scale. On machined faces it comes off in the first pass; untouched faces can stay that way or be cleaned with bead blasting. If the part will be painted or coated, the scale is removed first.
