If your part is lightly loaded, 1018. For a shaft or pulley, 1045. With many threads, 12L14 is cheaper. If it carries load or takes impact, 4140. For a punch or die, tool steel. Upload your file and we’ll help you choose.

FAQ
Steel is what most machinery is made of: it’s strong, weldable, hardenable and inexpensive. That’s why it’s machined into flanges, drive shafts, axles, pulleys, couplings, bushings, pins and dowels, and into spare parts for machinery, pumps, conveyors and farm equipment.
Which steel to choose? 1018 is the most economical and easiest to weld, for lightly loaded parts. 1045 has more carbon: it’s stronger and can be hardened, the classic choice for shafts and pulleys. 12L14 and 1144 cut faster, so a part with many threads costs less. 4140 is the general-purpose alloy steel for parts that carry load or take impact; 4340 takes even more, 8620 is case-hardened for a hard surface and tough core, and 9840 is used in high-strength axles and shafts. For punches, dies and mold inserts, tool steels H13, D2 and A2.
Steel turning is the most common —shafts, flanges, pulleys, couplings, bushings and pins come from round bar— and milling makes plates, brackets, keyways and prismatic parts. On a CNC lathe with Y axis, a shaft comes off with its keyway and flats in a single setup.
Unlike a directory or a shop that answers in days, at PREMSA you upload your STEP or PDF drawing, choose the steel and quantity, see your price and order from one part.
