-83.34%D2 tool steel (AISI D2, ASTM A681) is a cold work tool steel with high carbon (~1.5%) and high chromium (~12%). Its chromium carbides give it very high wear resistance, and hardened it reaches 58–62 HRC. It is sold annealed as round bar, plate, block and flat bar, and that is how it is machined: it is hardened afterwards to reach its hardness. D2 is chosen when what matters most is that the part withstands wear for a long time.
If your drawing doesn’t specify tolerances, we machine to ISO 2768-m (medium). On dimensions you call out —holes, fits and datum surfaces— we can hold ±0.025 mm (±0.001 in), and critical dimensions are checked in inspection. Tolerances apply to the part as it comes off the machine: if it is hardened afterwards, heat treatment can move it a few hundredths of a millimeter, so tight dimensions are left with stock to be ground after hardening.
D2 is machined annealed with CNC turning, CNC milling, drilling and tapping.
D2 is air hardened from about 1,010 °C (1,850 °F) and tempered to the hardness on the drawing, usually 58–62 HRC. We machine the part and, if you ask, send it out for heat treatment.
