If your part has many threads and won’t see harsh environments, 303 is cheaper to machine. For general use and food contact, 304. For salt water or chemicals, 316. If it needs hardness, 416 or 420. Upload your file and we’ll help you choose.

FAQ
Stainless steel is used where a part can’t rust: in contact with water, food, chemicals or outdoors. That’s why it’s machined into flanges, pipe plugs, couplings, threaded fittings, shafts, bushings and parts for food, medical and process equipment.
303 contains sulfur so the chip breaks: it’s the easiest to machine and the right choice for parts with many threads. 304/304L is the general-purpose grade and 316/316L holds up better to salt water and chemicals. 416 and 420 are martensitic: they can be hardened for shafts, screws and wear parts. The difference between 304 and 316 is the molybdenum in 316, which makes it more corrosion resistant.
Stainless steel turning is the most common —flanges, plugs, couplings, shafts and bushings come from round or hex bar— and milling makes plates, brackets and prismatic parts. Stainless work-hardens as it’s cut, so we use tooling and feeds made for stainless, and NPT and metric threads come out to your drawing.
